"remote control" your Windoze box

i am not new to remote desktops. about 2 years ago, while i was still in college, i also worked for a cable internet company. basically i was assigned to tech support. graveyard shift! all night long i’d just wait for subscribers to phone-in in case they have trouble with their connection (boring! .. .my original super, who had a big project — that involved linux and servers– in mind for me, left for kosovo and the replacement just won’t allow me to handle the servers.).

part of the tasks assigned to those who got the graveyard shift was to edit the channel schedules for HBO, Cinemax, Star Movies, and etc., for the following day (yeah it sucked some more!). although the Windoze 2000 server feeding the channel skeds was just next door, we connected to it via remote desktop connection.

yesterday at work, we had a mini conference. an unconference, as they called it. part of the topics was remote desktop connection. in our office i’m only one of the 2 people using Linux for their workstations. i’ve always believed that you could only do remote desktop connections on similar operating systems. boy was i wrong. KDE has this application called krdc for handling remote desktop connections. during the conference, i supposedly couldn’t join the “netmeeting” as it was a Windoze only application. yet i was there. i was able to view what was going on throughout the conference without leaving my workstation. thanks to remote desktop connection!
