i’ll “text” you thru my GMail.. .

Google offers those who have GMail accounts the option to send or forward messages to a cellphone in SMS format. it’s just like texting or text messaging (as it is popularly known here in the Philippines) but you send it via your GMail account instead.

how does google do this?

well you have to sign up for Google Talk first. of course, you have to have a GMail account to be able to do this. (so which is it really? sorry, that’s how it goes. just like YM requires you to have a Yahoo! account first.) and like all other IM services out there, you can have a separate client for Google Talk so you don’t have to login to your GMail everytime. for Windows users you can download here. Linux users can use Kopete or GAIM.

for US subscribers, you can add the cellphone number to your Google Talk buddy list like this:

AT&T (former) customers: 10digitphonenumber@mmode.com
Alltel: 10digitphonenumber@alltelmessage.com OR 10digitphonenumber@message.alltel.com
CellularOne: 10digitphonenumber@mobile.celloneusa.com
Cingular: 10digitphonenumber@cingularme.com
Nextel: 10digitphonenumber@messaging.nextel.com
Omnipoint: 10digitphonenumber@omnipointpcs.com
Qwest: 10digitphonenumber@qwestmp.com
Sprint: 10digitphonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com
T-Mobile: 10digitphonenumber@tmomail.net
Verizon: 10digitphonenumber@vtext.com
Virgin Mobile: 10digitphonenumber@vmobl.com

but wait! supposedly this added feature is available only in the US?!

yeah, but recently my good friend Trigger stumbled on a “hack” to get around this supposed limitation. so good news for all you text-crazee Filipinos! here’s another way to extend your texting capabilities for free, and one more reason to forward your corny jokes or annoy your officemate!

ooops, but the how-to is available on my tech blog! find out more here, http://yamzz.blogspot.com
