Kubuntu on a Compaq Presario V3194

was sitting lazily at Starbucks the other day, surfing the web and all that, when i thought of testing out a Kubuntu on my Compaq Presario V3194 laptop. this is a Kubuntu 6.06 LTS version. obviously it would run fine on a Kubunutu. what i wanted to test out was if it could handle the WiFi without having to tweak anything else. an officemate had some problems connecting to a wireless network using Kubuntu on his laptop.

at the desktop: i fired up the wireless network utility (i forgot the name) and i was surprised that it has already connected to the WLAN. the SSID was correct. it got an IP address from DHCP. Great! everything was done without my intervention. and i was already half convinced that it wouldn’t work without having to Google for How-Tos on how to install wireless device drivers for Linux and etc.

now this is a very welcome surprise for me. i was hesitant to install Linux on my laptop coz not everything might work, especially the Wifi. besides, i haven’t installed Linux on a laptop yet. maybe soon enough. if the Windows XP Home wasn’t paid for when i got my Compaq, i would have installed Linux right away.

also the bluetooth device was properly detected and i think was already active the moment Kubuntu was at the desktop. too bad i didn’t have a cellphone with bluetooth capabilities. would have been good to test it out too.
